The symbolism between a husband and wife!

What is Wedding Photography?

WHAT IS WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY?
BY
ANGELA A. CASPERSON
One of the most challenging careers in photography is being a wedding photographer. Wedding photography is also referred to as wedding photojournalism.  The photographers are telling a magical story of that once in a lifetime event through their cameras.  It is different than any other kind of photography.  The photographer must take portraits, posed shots, still life shots, and action images.  Wedding photography can be a very rewarding career if you master it and book enough jobs.  It is an interesting way to make a living.

A wedding day is one of the most important days in a girls life.  The bride may spend months thinking about and planning her big event.  A wedding photographer captures that big day so those memories last forever. There is a lot of pressure put on the photographer.  They are expected to capture those one time shots and create beautiful compositions. A good wedding photographer has a good eye to be able to imagine the shot before taking it, although they never know what is going to happen next. They are able to capture the right mood or feeling with each wedding they photograph.  All weddings are different and have different themes.  Some may be fun to candid, romantic to elegant, ultra fancy, or traditional.  Some weddings may be cultural or religious so the photographer studies the symbolism of specific religious rituals and understand particular cultures. It's the photographers job to reflect the personalities of the bride and groom in the images. Doing this may require the photographer to get down low, get up high, or take images at wide angles. The photographer looks outside the box and has an open mind. There are hundreds and thousands of wedding photographers around the world.  The photographers that create a unique and recognizable style are the most successful.  People look at their work and say, "Wow now that photographer knows what they are doing!"

According to Micheal Roney's Trash the dress article in Wedpix Magazine, " More couples these days are favoring the un-styled, unplanned moments of the wedding rather than the prescribed agenda of highly organized groups of people staring at the camera." Brides and grooms want awesome imagery from their wedding. Photos unlike any other. Photographers follow their subjects throughout the entire day to capture the whole story of the big event. Capturing those kisses the bride and groom may sneak in, thinking no one is looking.  Capturing the unexpected toasts and the hilarious dances on the dance floor is all part of the photographer's job. Couples today are also ditching the wedding finery and walking through abandoned amusement parks, wondering through cornfields, walking train bridges, and wading in forest streams. The possibilities are limitless. Location plays a big role in the success of the wedding photographer.

The wedding photographer is always well prepared. Equipment the photographer will bring to the job include the camera, flash, lenses, 2-3 memory cards, tripod, remote shutter release, and lens cleaning material. A well prepared photographer brings at least 2 or 3 of each type of equipment in case of something breaking.  Micheal Ray, a commercial photographer, says in his article, How to become a wedding photographer; "The question is not "if" your equipment is going to break, the question is "when" it's going to break."  Cameras and flashes are like computers and hard drives.  They can break down at anytime and sometimes when least expected. Nobody wants to wait on the photographer while they borrow someone else's camera to finish the job.  Another way a photographer prepares is talking to the wedding party and finding out what their expectations are. They usually always have specific shots and people they want photographed during the wedding.  A shot list is usually always sitting in the photographer's back pocket waiting to be pulled out when needed.  The last thing a photographer wants is to leave a wedding and remember they forgot a certain shot. There are no second chances with weddings.

Wedding photographers know all aspects of photography.  Anyone can pick up a camera and call themselves a photographer, but do they really know what they are doing?  There is more to photography than just knowing how a camera works.  Learning and managing  the digital work flow is to great importance.  This includes color management, digital image processing, file management, and image corrections and enhancements. Certain colors look great together and certain colors clash. Putting the right colors into a composition make the pictures all the better. Photographer's have a certain organizational plan for their work flow as well.  The business part of photography goes a lot more smoothly for the photographer and their clients with an organized work flow.

Weddings are suppose to be fun and about celebrating.  The more fun the photographer has, the more relaxed the wedding party and family will be. "Marriages are made in heaven, committed on earth however, captured in a camera via photography."  Timory Koch, May 18th, 2009, Wedding Photography.  Wedding photography has the license to be artistic and free. It is the art of telling a story of a magical event that celebrates the love of two people.  Creativity is the key to this exciting career.
